“Jesus Christ Superstar” will be resurrected for a tour spanning fifty cities across North America. Fans of the rock opera, which opened on Broadway in 1971, may be hit with a twinge of late-nineties nostalgia: Mary Magdalene will be played by Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, JC Chasez of ‘N Sync as Pontius Pilate, and Brandon Boyd of Incubus will be Judas Iscariot. The opera, whose music was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is loosely centered on the last week of Jesus’s life. Its initial Broadway production was immensely praised and received five Tony Award nominations. The show did, however, have a fair amount of controversy given the religious subject matter. Its revival this summer is nevertheless very exciting for fans. The production’s first show will be on June 9 at the UNO Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, LA.
Of the fifty cities, the show will be making several stops in Florida in June, including the Amway Center in Orlando and the Tampa Bay Times Forum in Tampa before heading to west. Texan fans will have the chance to see the show in San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. West Coasters, be sure to snag tickets for shows in San Diego, Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, and Los Angeles’s Staples Center. The tour will finish up on the east coast at Madison Square Garden in New York City on August 5 and the final show in Washington DC on August 7.
