Atoms for Peace Tour 2013
In October 2009, at the Echoplex in Los Angeles, a strange thing happened. Thom Yorke, Flea (from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, duh), Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker (of Beck & R.E.M), and Mauro Refosco got together and played the entirely of Yorke’s first solo album, The Eraser. For the next year, they continued to play shows across the U.S. billed either as “??????” or “Thom Yorke????” It wasn’t until February 2010 that they officially announced themselves as a band – Atoms for Peace. The name either comes from a 1953 Dwight Eishenhower speech, or the title of a song off of The Eraser, or both.
What brings these fabulous musicians together? Their love of music, duh. But more specifically, their love for Afrobeat. At least according to Yorke, their debut album is “the product of getting together, getting wasted and listening to Fela Kuti.” Speaking of their debut album, Amok became available for streaming February 18, 2013, and was released on February 25, 2013. Check it out and check them out.
