Emeli Sande bio

UK songstress Emeli Sande (born Adele Emeli Sande) launched her career as something of a family affair. In 2008, when she was just 21, her sister recorded a video of her playing the piano and singing “Naughty Little Girl,” which they submitted to a BBC Urban music competition. Sande won the competition, but the deal with the connected management company fell through. Her parents then sent BBC Radio 1Xtra a CD of her music, a move that not only booked her shows for the station but also put her in touch with writer/producer Naughty Boy. The two began writing for a number of British hip-hop/R&B artists, including rapper Chipmunk. Sande ended up appearing on his debut single in 2009, “Diamond Rings,” which ultimately hit #6 on the UK Singles Charts. Sande’s career quickly went from guest vocalist to potential solo artist, but first there was one small matter to attend to: her birth name of Adele was in steady competition with another rising British talent…

She debuted her first single “Heaven” in August of 2011 to critical praise, and had her first #1 hit with “Read All About It” with Professor Green that October. Her album Our Version of Events was released in February 2012 and hit #1 on the charts. Just recently, she broke a record held for almost 50 years by The Beatles for having the longest-running album in the Top 10 UK charts (63 weeks being the new number to beat). She’s also picked up British female artist and best album at 2012 BRIT Awards and sang at both the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics. Her next big challenge, though, is breaking into the US market. With a slew of hits and acclaimed collaborations, a Stateside audiophile might be wondering, “Where should I start?” A number of US tour dates are slated for this summer, but start brushing up now on what could be the next British female vocalist to score your latest heartbreak.
