UPDATE: Legends of Summer

When he is not scoring the new Great Gatsby film or heading the new Broadway version of Annie, Jay-Z will be teaming up with Justin Timberlake for the Legends of Summer tour during the warmer months.

Announced this past week, the duo, who have one of the hottest hits in the country right now with “Suit & Tie”, will play a total of 12 cities on the tour, starting on July 17 in Toronto at the Rogers Centre. The tour will play stadiums in these cities: New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Pasadena, Vancouver, Hershey, Detroit, Baltimore, Boston and Philadelphia before wrapping up on August 16 in Miami at Sun Life Stadium.

Tickets for the tour go on sale February 28, except for the Yankee Stadium show. You can find the best deals on all tickets for the tour right here at SeatGeek.

UPDATE

Well, of course he is: Jay-Z has been tapped to lend his multifarious talents to another high-profile production, signing on to executive-produce the upcoming Broadway revival of Annie. Will Smith will act as co-producer on the project, which initially saw the actor’s daughter, Willow, attached to the lead role. The littlest Smith has since grown too old (and angsty) to play Little Orphan Annie, but presumably another “hip” up-and-comer will fill her shoes, one able to tackle the musical’s classic songbook in addition to the revival’s “full dose of modern music influences.”

Could this be the new production’s opening number…?

Great Gatsby Soundtrack

A sentimentalist in the term’s least pejorative sense, director Baz Luhrmann has never been one to temper a swooning romance, an epic plot, a borderline gluttonous reverence for color, light and music. When speaking of the Australian auteur, “borderline” is often a necessary modifier. His over-the-top pasticheries – in which Butthole Surfers and opera singer Alessandro Safina are embraced with the same egalitarian love for the right song at the right moment, with the same aesthetic disdain for genre continuity – are often so earnest, waving their jazz hands for the camera, that the saving, zany moments of irreverence equally typical of the director’s style tend to be overlooked, or mistook for sensory overload. For many, his films are borderline gauche, borderline tacky, borderline bad.

But it’s Luhrmann’s equal parts earnest and irreverent reveling in the limits of taste and emotionality that makes his films so distinct in their look and appeal (if they do to you), and which makes their soundtracks so frankly wonderful. The pairing of Rufus Wainwright and Fatboy Slim (on the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack), or perennials Radiohead and one-hit-wonders The Cardigans (Romeo + Juliet), is on-point and weird, curated couplings that mimic an iPod’s shuffle feature, without that device’s taste-less fallibility. Luhrmann’s latest work, the much-anticipated The Great Gatsby, is sure to be no exception to the director’s rule: The soundtrack stands alone as a complementary work of art.

Great Gatsby Soundtrack: Jay-Z

Today (1/02), it was revealed hip-hop impresario Jay-Z would score The Great Gatsby. While nothing official has come down from on high, otherwise known as the film and the rapper’s respective “people,” Jay-Z collaborator Jeymes Samuel of The Bullitts recently tweeted: “Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!”

Isla Fisher, who plays Myrtle Wilson in the film, previously told MTV News Luhrmann would blast Jay-Z during the actors’ takes. “On my first day he had Jay-Z pumped up full, and we did the entire scene with … Jay-Z in our ear on full blast while acting… It was so liberating.”

The Jay-Z/Kanye West song, “No Church in the Wild,” is featured on the film’s first official trailer. Other artists providing the hedonistic and/or creepy ambiance in trailers number one and two include Jack White (who covers U2′s “Love is Blindness”), Florence + The Machine (“Bedroom Hymns”), and Filter (turning The Turtles’ “Happy Together” into a murderous caterwaul). While Luhrmann hasn’t released a statement confirming or denying any soundtrack details, rumors of potential contributors have been swirling for months, and gaining force. We’ve compiled a list of the biggest names being bandied about below, as well as included the posters and soundtracks to two of Luhrmann’s greatest success stories: Moulin Rouge! and Romeo + Juliet.
