Rumblings Begin As Hellfest 2013 Announces Headliners
It began as a small but burgeoning batch of indoor festivals. They flew a DIY banner and went by the name Furyfest (or FURYFEST, if that clarifies things). After several nomadic years, and following a reboot and rebranding, it returned with a vengeance in 2006, as Hellfest. Since then the French festival, held mid-June in Clisson, just outside the city of Nantes, has generated a lineup culling from multiple circles of metal and hardcore, pairing it with towering headliners — like ZZ Top and KISS in 2013 — who’ve sanded down their edges, if only a bit more.

Next year will mark the third occasion of KISS summoning its Army’s European division to Hellfest. And yet this festival retains a reputation, rightly so, for its generous eclecticism. In 2012 Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Machine Head formed its triumvirate of headliners. As for 2013′s installation: New names are still being added to the mix, which currently sits at over 100, but only the aforementioned pair has been formally announced as the top-tier performers. (There are however three nights to fill.) Passes for all three days are going for 160€.
