UPDATE 3/22/13

LL Cool J has just announced a “Kings of the Mic” tour with an all-star line-up of Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Doug E. Fresh, and DJ Z-Trip. Dough E. Fresh will be replaced by De La Soul. Click here for more info on tickets and tour dates!

UPDATE

After a successful night of Grammy-hosting & vamping, LL Cool J is getting back to the basics: releasing some killer new material. Check out the studio version of the song the rapper premiered at the awards show, “Whaddup” (featuring Chuck D, Travis Barker, Tom Morello, and Z-Trip), via Consequence of Sound here.

Original Post

At 45 and after 12 studio albums, one of rap’s pioneers is about to find out if the Ladies still do Love Cool James: LL Cool J is slated to drop record no. 13, Authentic Hip Hop, come the new year. The star, who describes his latest effort as more “mature” and not meant to “pander to teenagers” (per an interview with Rolling Stone), will co-host his fifth Grammy Nominations Concert with Taylor Swift tonight, although we’re less concerned – if still excited – about that high-profile gig than which appearances LL Cool J might make in 2013. We know the album drops May 7th – but when’s the tour?

So far, the superstar is keeping mum on potential tour stops and dates. However, while we wouldn’t necessarily call this a comeback (he really wouldn’t want us to), it has been six years since the mind behind “Mama Said Knock You Out” dropped an album of new material. Chances are he’ll throw some promotional heft behind the new release, and while that iTunes pre-order he made available on November 27 was all well and good, nothing compares with a live show. We’ll keep you updated as LL Cool J releases more details. In the meantime, check out some of the rapper’s greatest hits, and former setlist, below:
