UPDATE: Coachella

Sigur Ros will be returning to the United States after their tour of the country in March and April. What for you might ask? They have been added to one of the largest music festivals in the United States – Coachella.

Set to take place April 12-14 and April 19-21 in Indio, California, the festival will feature the Icelandic band on April 13 and April 20, the Saturday night of each weekend. The band joins the headliners scheduled to perform throughout the festival – The Stone Roses, Blur, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Phoenix.

In other news, the band also revealed that they are currently working on a new album to be released later this year. The album will be their seventh album and will come shortly after Valtari was released back in May of 2012.

Tickets for Coachella go on sale January 29.

UPDATE

All for the love of science is theme for this update. Sigur Ros, who are slated to perform both dates in the United Kingdom and United States next year, just revealed details to play a show as part of the 2013 Jodrell Bank series on August 30. What exactly is this you might ask?

Every year the music series sees bands perform under the Lovell Telescope at the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, United Kingdom. According to NME, “ticket-holders will be able to take part in science experiments and workshops at the site’s Discovery Centre. The band will also project visuals onto the 76 metre-long telescope – which is one of the most powerful radio telescopes in the world and has been used by astronomers to explore outer space since 1957.”

Quite a cool set up for you music/science fans out there. Tickets for the show go on sale this coming Friday, January 18. You can find the best deals right here at SeatGeek.

Sigur Rós formed in 1994, and released their debut album, Von, three years later. But it wasn’t until their 1999 release, Ágætis byrjun, did the band receive widespread critical attention, with some critics calling it “one of the greatest albums of its time.” Soon after, Sigur Rós was opening for the likes of Radiohead, and their music was appearing in TV and films, including Wes Anderson’s “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.” Sigur Rós is known for their minimalist, classical sounding music, and frontman Jónsi Birgisson’s falsetto vocals. Their style has been described as ethereal and ambient.
