“Most of the best music ever made came out of Detroit,” said Mayer Hawthorne, and he’s been no slouch in supporting his statement. Andrew Mayer Cohen, who goes by the stage name Mayer Hawthorne, was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and raised on music influencers like Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Smokey Robinson and Jay Dilla – which explains how he effortlessly combines retro soul with smooth hip hop flow. Fun fact: he actually performs and records hip hop under the stage name “Haircut”.

Andrew moved out to Los Angeles in 2006 and signed with Stones Throw Records, not expecting to produce any Mayer Hawthorne tracks — they were solely side projects at the time. However, Stones Throw Records’ label head, Peanut Butter Wolf, insisted these tracks be made into an album, and in November 2008, Hawthorne released a red heart-shaped 7” record featuring his debut single, “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out”.

In May of 2011, Hawthorne was inked to Universal Republic Records and released his second album, “How Do You Do”. “I found my own unique sound on this album,” said Hawthorne, and boy was he right. The album presents a mix of Motown 70s soul with funky bass lines, and Snoop Lion (formerly Dogg) even makes an appearance in the song “Can’t Stop”.

Next week on July 16, Hawthorne is set to release his third album, “Where Does This Door Go”. He sticks to his soul roots but blends in hints of hip hop, funk, and disco as well, additions that are highlighted by guest features Kendrick Lamar and Pharrell.

If you’re in New York or Los Angeles, there’s some high demand to attend his album release events at Bowery Ballroom and the Troubadour, which sold out nearly instantaneously. Tickets are being sold on the secondary market for over 8x face value! We here at SeatGeek had the pleasure of listening to the album and we absolutely love it! Hawthorne has polished up his Motown infused style, pushing out a string of songs with smooth vocals and bumpin’ beats. But don’t just take our word for it, check him out yourself. We’re sure he won’t disappoint.
