It’s hard to believe it’s been almost ten years since 7-foot-6 Chinese wonder Yao Ming was selected first overall in the 2002 NBA draft. Yao’s game translated to the NBA just as advertised: when he was healthy, he was great. It took some time for him to adjust, but in the ’04-05 season, he averaged 18.3 points per game along with 8.4 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Unfortunately for the big man, he just couldn’t stay healthy.

Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski broke the story on Twitter today that Yao would be retiring at the young age of 30 after 8 injury-riddled seasons and 486 games in the NBA.

It’s unfortunate that Yao couldn’t keep his career going… we wish him all the best!
