The final rosters haven’t been announced yet (voting doesn’t end until June 28th), but whoever ends up starting the game, fans know that the MLB All-Star game always provides a thrilling concentration of the most talented, exciting players in the big leagues. Moreover, a rule change in 2003 that gave home field advantage in the World Series to the winning league ensures that the game is no longer just an exhibition. Even if you can’t make the game itself, MLB’s All-Star week festivities have other attractions, such as the Futures Game, Home Run Derby, and Celebrity Softball Game.

The 2012 MLB All Star Game in Kansas City

This year, the All Star game and the surrounding festivities wil be held at Kauffman Stadium, the Kansas City Royals‘ gorgeous ballpark. The game itself will be held on Tuesday, July 12, and it should be better than ever, with an intriguing mix of established stars, such as Joey Votto and Derek Jeter, and younger phenoms, like Giancarlo Stanton and Buster Posey. In addition, Bryce Harper and Mike Trout, both of whom have been performing at unprecedented levels given their age and experience, could very well make their respective teams in the Final Vote.

MLB Futures All Star Game 2012

Fans going to the Futures Game on July 8 will get to see the very best prospects that the minor leagues have to offer. Last year, lucky fans in Phoenix got to watch Mike Trout and Bryce Harper (2012′s two leading candidates for Rookie of the Year) on the field at the same time. This year, the game will once again be played as US prospects against World prospects. Thrilling talent and athleticism will be on display, with perhaps no player better exemplifying this than the Reds’ Billy Hamilton (playing for the US team), who has stolen 90 bases in only 70 games this year.

2012 MLB All Star Game Celebrity Softball Game

The most lighthearted event of the weekend will almost certainly be the Celebrity Softball Game, which will take place on July 8. As always, the game will feature a mix of celebrities, such as Mad Men’s Jon Hamm and country music star David Nail, and former ballplayers like Rickey Henderson and Kansas City’s beloved George Brett.

MLB All Star Game 2012 Ticket Prices

Though perhaps not as exciting as the game itself, there are some very interesting facts and intriguing trends around tickets for this year’s All Star Game in Kansas City. To start, at their current average resale prices, Full Strip tickets are the most expensive tickets in Kansas or Missouri over the last 3 years. 2012 MLB All Star Game TicketsFurther, tickets to just the All Star Game itself, which have been going around $660, are more expensive than any individual game in those same two states over the past 3 years; even Game 7 of the World Series last year, held at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, had an average ticket price of $572.25, nearly $100 less than this year’s All Star Game. Now you might expect that this is because the All Star Game will attract more national attention (all baseball fans, not only local supporters, would love to be at the All Star Game), and you are probably right: our research shows that about half of all traffic for All Star Game tickets is coming from fans outside of Kansas and Missouri. Finally, looking at the trends of tickets to the two most recent MLB All Star Games, we can expect two things going forward. First, the number of tickets bought and sold on the secondary market should skyrocket. And second, the prices will likely come down.
