San Antonio Spurs – Los Angeles Lakers 2013 NBA Playoffs

Two of the most familiar names in recent NBA Playoff history are set to meet in round one of the 2013 NBA Playoffs. The San Antonio Spurs, led once more by superstars Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili will be hosting the Los Angeles Lakers in round one of the Western Conference playoffs. Despite their offseason acquisitions of all-stars Dwight Howard and Steve Nash to team up with Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant, the Lakers struggled through injuries and poor play this season, qualifying for the playoffs only on the last day of the 2013 NBA season.

The Lakers’ biggest injury came in the last week, as Bryant ruptured his Achilles tendon and will miss the entire 2013 NBA Playoffs; however, in his absence, the return of Gasol has helped lead to the team’s best performances in months. The Spurs are not at full strength, either, as Park is just returning from an injury, Ginobili is still out for an indefinite period, and depth at the center position is weakened with the loss of Brois Diaw to injury. With all of these injuries, this 2013 NBA playoff round one matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs has a lot of name recognition, but analysts don’t expect either team to be at the top of their game. Look for San Antonio’s great coaching and consistent defense to limit the Lakers enough for the Spurs to make it through to the next round.

Lakers – Spurs Playoff Preview

While the Spurs have had a much better season than the Lakers overall, and Los Angeles is missing their biggest star due to Kobe Bryant’s injury, the Lakers defeated San Antonio in the last week behind strong performances from Dwight Howard and a resurgent Pau Gasol. The Spurs’ many injuries have left them vulnerable to the Lakers’ talented roster.
