Spotlight on the East Region of the NCAA Basketball Tournament
March Madness is here, and the first spaces are being filled in on everyone’s brackets with the First Round games in Dayton being played early this week. Next up comes the juicy, traditional craziness of the first two days, with 64 teams battling to build their resume and get one step closer to the Sweet 16. By the end of the wonderful first weekend, 52 teams will have had their date with destiny cancelled, and each regional site will finally know what four teams will be walking through its doors. Let’s take a look at the East Regional, a portion of the bracket which looks prime for an upset by the Michigan State Spartans, a squad that always seems feisty amongst the madness.
NCAA Tournament East Region Tickets
Virginia, Villanova, Iowa State, and Michigan State are all worthy torchbearers of Sweet 16-worthy schools, but half of them may not make the East Regional Semifinals in Madison Square Garden. A talented UNC squad is lurking at No. 6, UConn or St. Joe’s will present a challenge for east-coast rivals ‘Nova in the third round, and Harvard is lurking as the underrated 12-seed of the tournament. 2014 NCAA Tournament Favorites – East
Virginia defied the odds and staked their claim to ACC conference supremacy this season, riding consistent play on both ends of the floor and outlasting more unpredictable teams like Syracuse and Duke. Villanova shined brightly in what’s left of the Big East, but their reliance on the three point shot, while exciting, allows them to be vulnerable over a six-game win or go home schedule. If they can escape the first weekend and end up in the hallowed halls of their beloved Madison Square Garden in New York, though, all bets are off.
Iowa State won a hotly contested Big XII Tournament, but are they really that team or the one that suffered middling defeats during the regular season? All three are looking down in the seedings at a fast-rising, fourth-seeded MSU team, fresh off a victory in the Big Ten Tournament. Sparty looks poised to make another signature run in March with Tom Izzo at the helm, but are they being overvalued at this point? The winner of a Sweet 16 matchup between MSU and the Wahoos will produce the Final Four team from the East. Our money’s on the consistent Cavaliers.
