2014 NCAA West Regional Heavy on Heartland Charm
Spotlight on the West Region of the NCAA Basketball Tournament
March Madness is here, and the first spaces are being filled in on everyone’s brackets with the First Round games in Dayton being played early this week. Next up comes the juicy, traditional craziness of the first two days, with 64 teams battling to build their resume and get one step closer to the Sweet 16. By the end of the wonderful first weekend, 52 teams will have had their date with destiny cancelled, and each regional site will finally know what four teams will be walking through its doors. Let’s take a closer look at the West Regional, topped by PAC-12 champion Arizona, a dominant team during the regular season currently weakened by having their best player, Brandon Ashley, on the bench with an injury.
Arizona will basically be standing for the whole region, geographically speaking, seeing how the other main challengers are from the heartland of America. Wisconsin, Creighton, and Oklahoma pose serious threats to Arizona’s march to the Final Four, and fellow West-coasters San Diego State and Gonzaga won’t lay off because of neighborly loyalties.

2014 NCAA Tournament Favorites – West
If Arizona had Ashley, they’d be far and away the favorites to run away with the not-so wild West Region. However, his absence gives the consistently physical Wisconsin Badgers and three-raining Creighton Bluejays a chance to pick off the Wildcats. Oklahoma, without the big names or titles like other Big XII conference members, has still enjoyed a strong campaign and appear to be peaking at the right time. If they make it into the Sweet 16, they could show Arizona the door early. The Oregon-BYU winner could topple Wisconsin before they ever make it to Anaheim.
