NHL Outdoor Series: Games in 2014
NHL Winter Classic 2014
Detroit Red Wings vs. Toronto Maple Leafs
The 2014 NHL Winter Classic will take place in Ann Arbor, MI, at Michigan Stadium. This will come as welcome news for fans after last year’s Winter Classic, when the game was cancelled due to the NHL lockout. Prior to that, the New York Rangers won the 2011 Winter Classic against the Philadelphia Flyers. This will be the sixth annual Winter Classic (after the cancelled 2013 game), and will also be the first time a Canadian team participates in the event.
2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series
Los Angeles Kings vs. Anaheim Ducks
A match between hometown rivals the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks will kick off the first Coors Light NHL Stadium Series, which will feature four outdoor games over a period of three months. Starting at 7 p.m. PT/10 p.m. ET, the two Southern California hometown rivals will go head to head at Dodger Stadium. The Kings will be Home and the Ducks away. Although the game is happening at night, preventative measures to preserve the ice from melting have already been planned – the same ice-making technology employed by the Winter Classic in years past will make an appearance again for the Coors Light Stadium Series. The match will be a series of firsts: the first ever outdoor NHL regular season game in California, the southernmost NHL outdoor game ever, and the first ever hockey game played in the home of the Dodgers.
New Jersey Devils vs. NY Rangers
The second match, played between the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers, will be the first hockey game ever hosted by Yankee Stadium. The Devils will play as the Home team and the Rangers as Away. This will end up working in favor of the Rangers in that they finish their season with 41 home games at Madison Square Garden.
NY Islanders vs. NY Rangers
Chicago Blackhawks vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
Chicago’s Soldier Field will be hosting its second professional hockey game in less than a year. The final game of the Coors Light Stadium Series will be between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Chicago Blackhawks.
NHL Heritage Classic 2014
Vancouver Canucks vs. Ottowa Senators
The 2014 Heritage Classic will be held at BC Place in Vancouver, BC, between the Canucks and the Senators. This will be the third Heritage Classic, although the first took place back in November of 2003. The Heritage Classic was originally intended to function as a Canadian counterpart to the Winter Classic, as it only allowed American teams to play (a now defunct rule). The Calgary Flames were the last winners of the Heritage Classic in 2011.
