2013-14 NHL Tickets

It seems like only yesterday that the Chicago Blackhawks were winning their second Stanley Cup in four years, defeating the Boston Bruins in six games. The competitive, shortened 2013 season makes an October start for the 2013-14 NHL regular season seem a bit out of place, but the return to a full 82-game schedule and the addition of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi both cause the 2013-14 NHL season to expand. Hockey fans have been treated to a full NHL preseason since the players are not locked out, and a few interesting offseason developments have set up some interesting games in the initial stretch of the 2013-14 NHL schedule.

Last season’s playoffs featured excitement surrounding a resurgent and tough (if also lucky) Toronto Maple Leafs squad, a Pittsburgh Penguins team that loaded up on talent at the trade deadline, only to fall short, and the aforementioned Chicago Blackhawks who began the season with a historic points streak and finished the playoffs demonstrating why they truly deserved to be the front runner all season. Now, those Leafs have already been involved in the preseason’s nastiest scrum (goalie fight!), the Penguins are infusing home-grown talent where rented veterans stood at the end of the year, the Boston Bruins have reworked their lineup after trading away once-highly-touted Tyler Seguin to Dallas, and everyone’s still targeting the Hawks while they eye their third Cup in five years. The league is hoping to continue riding the wave of excitement built in last year’s playoffs to fuel big early turnouts during the 2013-14 NHL regular season, and NHL tickets in your town are likely to be in high demand from the first puck drop. Use SeatGeek ticket search and Deal Score to find the best value on NHL ticket prices for your favorite team!

New NHL Divisions

The newly structured NHL conferences are unbalanced, with 14 teams in the Western Conference and 16 teams in the Eastern Conference. Each conference is divided into two equal divisions. The Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings switched from West to East, while the Winnipeg Jets finally moved West following the team’s relocation from Atlanta a couple of years ago. We’ve listed each team’s total points from the shortened 2013 season so you can see how the new divisions stack up.

NHL Olympic Break 2014

The 2014 Sochi Olympics will feature ice hockey games played from February 12 through the February 23 Olympic gold medal game. Once again, professional hockey players, including those on rosters for the 2013-14 NHL regular season, are eligible to participate. The NHL Olympic hockey break will begin February 9, and the league will restart operations February 19. No games are scheduled until after the 2014 Olympic hockey gold medal game, but the early start will provide players not on Olympic rosters to begin practicing with their teams after the ten-day hiatus. Check back with SeatGeek for updates on the Winter Olympic hockey teams and the players representing their countries at the 2014 Russian games. The 2014 NHL All Star Game has also been cancelled because of this break, standard practice for the NHL since the Olympics started welcoming professional players.

Despite the trading coup they pulled off at the deadline, the Penguins suffered a number of injuries and never got back to full power in the Eastern Conference playoffs; they fell way short in the Conference Finals against Boston and are ready for the new campaign with a resurgent core centered by Sidney Crosby & Evgeni Malkin.
