Ticket Demand for 49ers – Seahawks NFC Conference Championship Game

The rule of three applies to so many parts of life: good things, bad things, and the deaths of favorite celebrities, just to name a few. And this season’s NFC Championship game between the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks has its own sets of three: the third straight NFC title game for the Niners, the third game between these two NFC West division rivals, and the third straight week of higher than usual NFL playoff ticket prices. The average ticket price on the secondary market is $736, making it the most in-demand NFL game we’ve seen aside from the Super Bowl. Ticket prices are 125% higher for the NFC Championship game than for the Seahawks’ divisional round game against the Saints ($327 average/ticket) and 110% higher than for this year’s regular season Seahawks-49ers game in Seattle on 9/15/2013 ($351).

While the AFC Championship game between New England and Denver features two of the most established & successful quarterbacks of all time, this matchup features two young & electric quarterbacks still looking to make their name on the games biggest stages. San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick got his first shot last season, defeating Atlanta in the NFC title game but falling short against Baltimore in Super Bowl 47. Seattle’s Russell Wilson, emerging as the most successful QB from last year’s draft class and nearly unstoppable on his home field, is hoping to hand his division rivals a second loss this season and punch his own ticket to this year’s Super Bowl 48. Perhaps that young electricity is part of the reason ticket prices are 13% higher than the average of $637/ticket being spent on AFC Championship seats for the Patriots at the Broncos.

While these two are the headliners, they’ll never face off 1-1 to decide the game; it’s the fierce defenses they’ll see across the line of scrimmage who will play a huge role in shaping how each QB is remembered from this matchup. The always-raucous Seahawks’ 12th Man at CenturyLink Field is likely to push the decibel limits beyond what the average person can bear, so we’ll get to see if the Niners offense, on a second-half roll including a defeat of Seattle on at the now-closed Candlestick Park, can perform better in the challenging environs of the Emerald City than it did in a crushing early season loss.

Seattle coach Pete Carroll and San Francisco head man Jim Harbaugh developed a dislike for each other coaching in the college ranks, and their continued rivalry adds another layer of nastiness and intrigue to this year’s game. We’ll have to see who has the more prepared team for all of the NFC Championship game’s twist and turns on the journey to Super Bowl XLVIII in New York.

NFC Championship Game Ticket Prices

This is the San Francisco 49ers’ third straight NFC Championship game, and the current average ticket price for this season’s game is now the highest we’ve seen in the last four seasons. It tops the previous high set by the New York Giants at San Francisco prices ($692) set in 2012.

The Seahawks’ decision to limit the original sale of tickets for Sunday’s game to six states, excluding California, has increased demand for tickets on the secondary market, particularly demand from 49ers fans. More than 30% of traffic to our event page for the NFC Championship game has come from California since the 49ers won in Charlotte; by comparison, just under 40% has come from Washington. The least expensive tickets for Sunday’s game are listed for $430 each in the corners of the upper deck. Lower-level seats behind the end zone start at $570 per ticket, and seats at the 50-yard line are going for at least $1,100 apiece, some in the first few rows for upwards of three grand per ticket.

San Francisco vs. Seattle Rivalry

The players don’t like each other. The coaches don’t like each other. Both fan bases are fueled by mutual disdain and create some of the most electric in-stadium experiences you’ll see for a game. The stakes couldn’t be higher for this NFC Championship game, a rubber match after two raucous divisional matchups this season conclude with one victory for either side.
